Purple Means Performance

car Drag Racer puts one of the leading high-performance automotive aftermarket synthetic motor oils to the test, and comes up with some interesting results.

High-performance racing motor oils have traditionally been the domain of professional racers. However, with today’s computer-controlled, high-performance road machines, motorists need a high-performance motor oil that can protect those expensive multiple valve trains and lightweight alloy engine components, too!

Not surprisingly, high-performance synthetic motor oils like Royal Purple, Inc.’s fine line of Royal Purple High Performance Racing Oils meets and exceeds those requirements and delivers performance and economy in the bargain.

“Racing oil sales have skyrocketed within the past year,” says Royal Purple director of communications Mark McFann. “Our racing oils (with the proprietary additive Synerlec) have always been popular with hardcore racers, but now it appears as though word of mouth has gotten street performance enthusiasts interested in them as well.”

The Porter, Texas-based manufacturer produces 13 different XPR Extreme Performance racing oils so that racers (and street performance enthusiasts) can run the lubricant that best suits their specific application. For instance:

ROYAL PURPLE XPR 5W20 is a light viscosity motor oil formulated to withstand exotic fuels, such as alcohol, methanol and nitrous oxide and is commonly used in drag racing. Some of your better known racers using XPR 5W20 include NHRA Stock Eliminator racer Bill Rink.

ROYAL PURPLE XPR 10W40 was designed for marine, oval track and endurance car racing. XPR 10W40 is capable of withstanding long intervals of extreme heat, and is extremely popular in sprint cars, late-model stocks and World of Outlaws racing. National Musclecar Racing Association (NMRA) Super Modified champion Jim Huber uses XPR 10W40 oil.

For this test we selected Royal Purple, Inc.’s XPR 20W50 oil with the proprietary additive Synerlec, Royal Purple’s Synchromax Manual Transmission Fluid and the Porter, Texas, high-performance oil manufacturer’s Max-Gear rear end oil. Also shown is RP’s Purple Ice Radiator Super Cooler.

ROYAL PURPLE’s NITRO 60 is a light viscosity performance motor oil that can withstand the brutal punishment delivered by exotic fuels like nitromethane without having its protective properties diluted. Royal Purple Nitro 60 is the oil of choice for racers like Dallas, Texas, Fuel Altered and match race Funny Car driver Dick De Metts.

“When I was running a conventional brand of oil, the main bearings in my JP-1 blown fuel Hemi (which runs on 82 percent nitromethane) would only last three or four runs tops. After switching to Royal Purple’s Nitro 60, bearing life was extended threefold.”

De Metts continued. “With conventional transmission fluids, I used to have to change the clutches in my Lenco two-speed transmission at least three or four times a year. Clutch life has been extended dramatically since switching to Royal Purple Max ATF.”

“I also used to get between two to four runs on my ring and pinion gear set before witnessing signs of galling in the ring gears. After switching to Royal Purple 85-140 Gear Oil, ring gear life has been extended to 20-25 runs with zero galling!”
